Arielle Houghton
Ash to Creation

Hi, I'm Arielle.
For a long time, I thought art was about the final project.
It all started when I was 6 years old. I still remember standing at a parent-teacher interview, looking up at my mother and teacher as they talked about how creative I was, all because of how I had decorated the name tag on my desk. It was a tiny moment, but it filled me with pride and shaped my identity as an "artist" for decades to come.
But years later, while hosting an art exhibition to fundraise for a refugee family resettling in my community, a colleague asked me a deceptively simple question: “What do you love about making art?”
To my surprise, I couldn't answer. The honest, uncomfortable truth was that I didn’t actually "love" it. I found the process difficult, stressful, and filled with harsh self-criticism. That realization sparked a deeper question: Why do I keep making art if I’m not enjoying it?
That question changed everything for me. It transformed my art practice into a deeply therapeutic process. I realized that creating something that looked good on the outside, but felt harsh or stressful on the inside, didn’t align with my values.
I decided to shift my focus from the final product to the process itself. Art became a safe space to face my negative self-talk and transform my inner dialogue. This ongoing practice is the heartbeat of my work today, and it is why I truly believe the arts are a powerful tool for becoming who we truly are.
My Background & Experience
I am a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC #4361) specializing in Expressive Arts Therapy. I hold a post-graduate diploma from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.
My practice is built on a diverse foundation of clinical training, community outreach, somatic movement, and nature-based facilitation. I believe in low-barrier, inclusive, and trauma-informed care that meets people exactly where they are at.
Somatic & Movement Practice
Before becoming a counsellor, I understood the interconnection between the body and mind. As a Certified Yoga Instructor, I spent years developing person-centered, inclusive movement that focused on the moving with the breath. This practice helped me work with clients to slow down and listen to the wisdom of the body. I offered classes within an mental health and addiction treatment centre, Ravensview by Homewood Health, as well as at Ashtanga Yoga Victoria and McTavish Arts Academy in Greater Victoria. This background informs the somatic foundation of my therapy practice today, helping clients find physical grounding and nervous system regulation.
Nature-Based & Youth Facilitation
I am passionate about the intersection of healing, creativity, and the natural world. Through my work with Hand in Hand Nature School, I design and facilitate outdoor therapeutic programs for youth cohorts, using nature-based activities to safely support emotional regulation, boundary setting, and healthy social connections. My background as a self-employed Permaculture Gardener & Landscape Consultant deepens my knowledge and respect for natural rhythms, growth, and ecology.
Clinical & Group Counselling Experience
My formal therapeutic training spans a wide spectrum of care across different life stages and settings:
-
Anxiety, Trauma & Neurodivergence: Delivers one-on-one virtual expressive art therapy, tailoring trauma-informed care and a playful approach to healing.
-
Community Mental Health: Co-facilitated virtual weekly expressive arts therapy groups with CMHA North Shore, fostering resilience and community connection.
-
Complex Care & Seniors Health: Designed on-site individual and group expressive arts programs at the Comox Valley Seniors Village, utilizing sensory modalities to support older adults navigating cognitive impairment.
Crisis Support & Community Advocacy
My commitment to anti-oppressive frameworks and cultural safety comes from years of hands-on community engagement. As a former Co-Chair of the Victoria Urban Food Table, I facilitated complex group dynamics and collaborated on policy development to support local food security and community well-being. Through my provincial organizing work with Dogwood BC, I coached and mentored diverse regional volunteer teams, focusing on open communication and leadership growth. From initiating low-barrier art spaces for unhoused individuals at Rock Bay Landing, to managing complex logistics and relationship-building with Indigenous healthcare facilities for Soap for Hope Canada, I have learned to approach crisis environments with a slow, low-pressure focus that prioritizes trust and safety above all else.
